EYFS Curriculum
When children begin their learning in the Reception year, they continue to build upon skills previously developed within the EYFS curriculum from the Nursery setting. The curriculum provides some elements of structure and teacher led learning whilst still maintaining child-initiated activities which are led by the interests of individual children.
There are three 'Prime' areas:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Physical Development
- Communication and Language
There are four 'Specific' areas:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Our small nursery provides the starting point for the children's journey through the EYFS at Woore Primary and Nursery School. Some children start their journey with us at the age of two, whilst others start a little later when they are three or four years old. From the moment they start, practitioners ensure that their progress in the prime areas is secure before moving onto the specific areas of learning.
Within our EYFS/Y1 class at Woore (Class 1), children in Reception currently work alongside Year 1 children within the Class 1 base. Common themes are developed termly across the school which link in with our long term planning cycles and the interests of the children. The Reception planning is closely linked to the KS1 Long term plan to ensure cohesion within the class.
Early reading and phonics is threaded through the curriculum through specific lessons and on-going provision within the environment as well as through songs and storytime.
Mathematics is developed from an early age and can be accessed within continuous provision across the EYFS. Children's knowledge of maths is encouraged within play and through discreet adult led focus.
Children have ample opportunities to develop their physical skills in our large outdoor play area and extensive grounds. Forest school takes place weekly and not only enhances opportunities for physical development but also that of communication and language and social skills.
