Modern Foreign Languages

At Woore Primary and Nursery School, we aim to provide our children with an opening to explore another language and culture, developing their curiosity and broadening their understanding of the world. Through our French curriculum, children develop the knowledge, vocabulary and skills needed to communicate in another language with increasing confidence.

We use the Kapow Primary French scheme of work, which provides a clear and progressive sequence of learning. Children build their knowledge of key vocabulary, phrases and grammatical structures, revisiting and embedding previously taught language as they progress through the school. Lessons develop the four key language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with a strong focus on accurate pronunciation and developing children's confidence in using French for practical purposes.

Children begin by developing foundational vocabulary and phrases, gradually progressing to more complex language and sentence structures. They have opportunities to apply their knowledge in different contexts, express ideas and communicate with others. Cultural understanding is also woven through the curriculum, enabling children to develop an appreciation of French-speaking countries and communities.

In Key Stage 2, children receive regular French lessons, allowing knowledge and vocabulary to be revisited, practised and built upon over time. Our aim is that, by the end of Key Stage 2, children have developed a secure foundation in French and the confidence and enthusiasm to continue learning a language in the future.
